Surf City NC

Topsail Tradition

Surf City has been the commercial heart of Topsail Island for over 60 years. The town has grown from a small fishing village that was home to a small handful of families to a year-round community of some 1,900. Recent commercial growth both on the island and the mainland provides additional opportunities for both visitors and residents alike. Visitors enjoy Surf City as "the way the beach used to be" quiet, serene and bucolic. Cross our historic "swing bridge," step back into the past and begin your family tradition.

Discover the Magic

It's all about the magic. You magic may be witnessed through the touch of sand on your feet, the scent of the offshore and onshore breezes that bathe Topsail Island or the constant motion of the waters as they stretch toward a deep blue sky. Perhaps it is a pod of dolphin passing by or a flock of shore birds passing overhead. Whatever your magic, it's here in Surf City. All day. Every day.

Generations of visitors have enjoyed Surf City, owing to its clean and uncrowded beaches that have become a hallmark of the town. There is free parking at 29 designated public beach access points that reach across the town's six mile oceanfront.

Inland Waterways

Lying west of Surf City, Topsail Sound and the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway separate the island portion of the town from the mainland. This narrow body of water, with its nearby creeks, estuaries and wetlands, provides the perfect setting for canoeing, kayaking, water and jet skiing and fishing. Both Soundside Park and Surf City Family Park offer playgrounds, piers, boardwalks and spectacular views of the setting sun. Soundside Park is the setting for a number of special events throughout the year.

Maritime Forest

Explore our maritime forests, frequently referred to as the 'jungle of the sea'. Here you will discover an extensive variety of plant and animal life.

Topsail's Turtles

Surf City is a sanctuary for loggerhead and other varieties of endangered sea turtles that typically nest on its shores from May through October. Their signature tracks, leading back into the sea, indicate that a turtle has come ashore. Surf City is home to The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center, whose volunteers treat injured sea turtles and then return them to their natural home.

The central business district offers a surprising choice of shopping opportunites - from boutiques that carry a variety of distinctive gifts to specialty shops featuring foods, souvenirs, resort wear and items for recreational activies. Plans are underway to bring a Walmart Neighborhood Market to the area in addition to an existing Harris Teeter for grocery needs.

A variety of indoor and outdoor dining facilities features coastal Carolina cuisine. Local fare ranges from shellfish and finfish to uniquely seasoned surf, turf and poultry. Whatever you enjoy, whatever your budget allows Surf City can provide it.
